My Nova Scotia Book Tour: Stop Three- ABC Books and Antiques

I'm excited to talk about my new summer project that is currently in progress. I’m calling it My Nova Scotia Book tour- my goal is to hit up as many independent book stores as possible this summer (and probably into fall)
There is only one rule: Purchase at least one book at each location.
This rule originates from when I’d do thrift tours with friends. Hitting a dozen thrift stores in one day can be tiring and if you leave a few spots with nothing it can feel discouraging, making the trip less fun. I use it when book shopping because;
It’s guaranteed there will be a book I’m curious about in any book store; and
These are small and independently owned businesses. I want to spend money with them. That money then stays in my local economy.
My third stop was a big sale- ABC Books and Antiques had recently bought some lots from another book store closing up shop so they had an outdoor $2 sale.
July 2026 Update: As of today, ABC Books and Antiques is still thriving and located at 12723 Peggys Cove Rd, Tantallon, NS B3Z 2N1.
This was stop 3 of 5 on what I called ‘My Nova Scotia Book Tour’ in 2021. Life got busy (as it tends to do) so I wanted to make sure I mentioned that the five places I stopped at are just a drop in the bucket for independent book stores here in Nova Scotia! You could make a career out of visiting all the wonderful stops available. There’s over 45 locally owned bookstores currently in Nova Scotia. Your TBR won’t know what hit it!

The selection was mainly non-fiction but I was able to snag quite a few gems.
After collecting a few books I also checked out the physical store, lots of antiques and a selection of fiction and non-fiction books. It’s a great place to check out if you want some classic trinkets.
The cashier was not a chatty one- we exchanged required pleasantries and that was about it. No problem, it’s not for everyone.
For books I came home with (all non-ficton):
Historical Maps of Canada. The artwork is beautiful and I really enjoyed the progress of borders as you got through the book.
Comedies by William Shakespeare. Another good smelling old book for the shelf.
A Book of Fireside Poems (which I will most likely never read fireside)
1812- A Book on the War of 1812. I really only bought this one because the first page stated it was a copy not intended to be distributed to the public and if a member of the general public finds it not to read it (so naturally I laughed out loud and bought it.
A book set on Japanese aircrafts. One is in English, the other in Japanese.
Top Secret Tales of WWII (it’s still sealed in plastic wrap still, how cool is that!)
Ghosts of Cape Sable (this one may get read fireside)
I saw a really great quote the other day (sadly author unknown) that really spoke to me.
“Buy Books from People who want to Sell Books, Not Colonize the Moon”
I decided to do this project for multiple reasons and my first reason was to support local businesses, and second was to get out into my community after COVID restrictions started to ease.
Given light to current events it shows how important supporting local is and not giving your money to someone who is so rich he could fix most of the worlds problems… But simply chooses not to.
That local book store owner will appreciate your $20 way more then him and it’ll most likely go to much better places.
